4 Tips on Cleaning Your Underdecking System

An underdeck ceiling provides many benefits to homeowners who want a dry outdoor space.  Aluminum panels are installed underneath the existing deck. This gives a clean space for all to enjoy. One advantage of an aluminum underdecking system is the ease of maintenance.

There’s not much you need to do to keep your underdeck system clean. However, there are some steps you should take to keep it looking good.

Under Deck Ceiling Care and Maintenance

Because the underdecking systems installed by RainTight are made of aluminum, they will not rust like steel or become brittle like vinyl. Although there’s no set schedule for cleaning an underdecking system, you do need to clean it occasionally to keep your outdoor space clean and free of debris.

1. A Quick Sweep

Cleaning your under-deck ceiling is simple. Most of the time all it needs is a sweep of a broom or extendable duster to brush away cobwebs, dirt, and dust that have accumulated.

2. Wipe Down Panels

You can restore the beauty of your underdecking by wiping down the panels with a household stain remover or degreaser. A cleaning agent like trisodium phosphate, TSP, is also a good choice. TSP can be harmful to house plants and pets, so use with caution.

Mixing Dawn dish soap with water is another excellent cleaning alternative. Use a soft sponge, old T-shirt, or cloth to avoid scratching the panels.

3. Remove Leaves and Debris

Not much debris collects in the drainage system because most of it is carried out through the downspout when it rains. If there are trees around your deck, however, you may get some leaf build-up. To prevent leaks due to blocked drainage, simply blow or sweep leaves from the upper deck as needed.

If there is debris or major clogging with the deck system, you may need to check the space between the deck boards. You can place an outdoor area rug on the upper deck, which will prevent the majority of debris from falling through the cracks. Most of this debris will wash out of the system without any problem but can sometimes clog up around the outlet of the downspout.

4. Power wash with Caution

Power washing the upper deck surface or the aluminum panels underneath will not harm them. The settings and strength of the power washer you use may need to be taken into consideration, however. Using a regular power washer on normal settings should not cause any problems.

Another factor to consider is the width of the gaps between the deck boards. Large gaps can let more high-pressure water through, so be extra careful when you power wash the upper deck. Remove any valuables that should not get wet from under the deck before you begin washing.

Advantages of Underdecking

With underdecking, you can create the outdoor space you’ve been dreaming about.

The color choices to match the existing decor of your home, add-on features, and easy maintenance are just a few of the benefits of installing an underdeck system. Here are some more pluses to consider.

An underdecking system allows you to enjoy the added outdoor living space with family and friends. With this space, birthdays, holidays, game days, or cookouts are much easier to set up for all invited.

This space can also be customized with added features. Homeowners can install utilities for lighting, ceiling fans, entertainment centers, and more. An extra living space enhances curb appeal that will surely attract buyers if your home is on the market. Home values can increase with the added space.

Unpredictable climates are known for ending a good party.  This is not the case when you have an underdecking system.
